ENREEC Student Feature - Emily Hanson

Emily Hanson is no stranger to the Eastern Nebraska Research, Extension and Education Center (ENREEC).  From Mead, Nebraska, Emily is a junior at UNL majoring in Plant and Landscape Systems (Agronomy Option, Agronomic Crop Production Emphasis) with a Mechanized Systems Management minor.  She plans on graduating December 2023.

Emily has worked with ENREEC for the past 3 summers in different intern positions.  In 2020, she worked with the Agronomy and Horticulture Department's weed science projects - with different product treatment plots and studies.  In 2021, she worked with ENREEC Farm Operations where she worked with Keena Crone (Farm Operations Manager) and Tyler Frederick (Farm Operations Assistant Manager)  operating irrigation systems and helped with and learned about some different farming practices that she hadn’t done before, like haying and silage production.  This past summer Emily worked for the Digital Ag Team with Joe Luck (ENREEC Associate Director) and Tyler Smith (Research Manager) where she assisted with different studies for Sensor-Based Fertigation and N-Rate.

When asked what she liked best about working at ENREEC, Emily said that her favorite thing is being able to have so many different experiences with 3 different internships.  Emily says, "Having so many different departments located at ENREEC has allowed me to have different internships each summer while still being at the same site."

Post-graduation, Emily is planning on either returning to the family farm or attending grad school at UNL.  She said that depending on what opportunities she has, she might look into doing both.

Outside of school, Emily teaches martial arts, helps her dad and uncle with the family farm, and works on restoring tractors.  Emily has been helping with the family farm since she was in junior high and working on antique tractors started because of that.  Emily says, "We have a collection of old John Deere two-cylinder tractors and my senior project in high school was restoring a 1944 John Deere Model A.  I started with martial arts in elementary school and have continued to attend classes and receive an instructor status to be able to help teach classes in Wahoo."
